Botanical name: Pseudotsuga menziesii
Type: Large tree
Sun requirement: Full sun
Height: up to 70m
Spread: up to 8m
Soil moisture: Dry - moist
Ideal habitat: Grows best in deep, well-drained, loamy soils (optimal mix of sand and clay and organics). They don't do well in soils that are lacking nutrients. They can grow in dry sites if their roots can access moisture. Douglas firs are an iconic old-growth forest tree that can be found in groves with a mossy understory.
Features: An ideal cover tree for many species of birds. Cones produce seeds which are also an excellent food source. These grow quickly to be massive old-growth trees, so make sure your site has room for it!
