Ideal habitat: In the wild, Black hawthorne can be found growing along wetland edges, stream banks and moist upland sites.
Features: Showy white flowers in the spring with dark fruit that stays on late in the fall. Also referred to as a thornapple, this shrub has impressive thorns. Hedges of Black hawthorne create a safe haven for songbirds to nest and feed (it is a favourite of Cedar Waxwings) protecting them from predators who may be deterred by its prickly stems.
